Prequel to the horror franchise set in the US's new regime of goverment with a trial basis of a 12 hour no-holds barred levy of crime on Staten Island where those who remain are condemned to fight for their very lives or die trying. While screen writer James DeMonaco and director Gerard McMurray try to add some juice to the series the film is predictable and not too compelling in spite of its well-acted unknown cast (and a slumming Tomei wasted). So listen, I went into this movie not expecting the best. I'm a big fan of the purge movies so maybe this will come offbiased… but I think I'm the 1% that thinks this is one of the best purge movies. After the complete train-wreck of a third that was 'Election Year' this movie brought the franchise back to life and gave it more of an understanding. They delve into why people do the things they do when they purge, what people thought was and wasn't acceptable when the 'social experiment' first arose… yeah ok, so the movie has its clichè moments, but some of the issues they touch on are very much real life… the struggle for people with little to no income, the things people would do to gain income at such a time, and the way that the government can pretty much do anything to make themselves look good. I enjoyed this movie, please please don't knock it until you try it, besides, they're all fun right? The most politically potent sci-fi/horror film series since the early years of George A. Romero gets a bloody, visceral and yes, emotional prequel with The First Purge, the movie that tells how we got from “here” to “there.”
