Five or ten years ago, you could get away with really screwing up on your movie adaptation of a classic comic book superhero. When Richard Pryor - Richard freaking Pryor, the comedian - headlined Superman 3, or when Joel Schumacher raped Batman with a disco ball and made Bane wear a Hulk suit, we could forgive those things because they were stomping on new ground anyway. Nobody had ever done a successful third episode to a superhero movie franchise. But ever since square one - Marlon Brando and those sweet, sweet Mario Puzo scripts that started it all with Superman 1 and 2 - we've known how to pull off at least a good 'start' to a superhero franchise.

Not to mention the rabble of others since that have attacked us on all sides, and managed to get things right: Spider man (goofy but good), X-Men (hasty but solid), Batman Begins (dark and believable), Iron Man (charmingly ironic), and even the Burton Batman, which was a little too much purple, and not enough black, but still rocked pretty hard. There's also a whole s%&#storm of other ones that didn't work, but at least showed us what NOT to do in the future: Ang Lee's Hulk (too avante garde, and Gumbythe Hulk), Fantastic Four (Doctor Doom, the single heaviest supervillain of all time, played by some poser fruitcake from Nip Tuck), Jonah Hex (why?) and Catwoman (Sharon Stone was a plastic-surgery-themed villain in that one). So there was ample opportunity to learn from the past, pick what worked and not doom the Green Lantern movie franchise from the start, but apparently that opportunity wasn't ample enough.

So then why did this suck so much? I'll start with the obvious: NO movie is going to be good just from having CGI - even a lot of CGI - in it. CGI hasn't really been mind-blowing since Jurassic Park, and hasn't even necessarily been a good thing since Star Wars: Special Edition. Correlary: if your CGI doesn't lookgoodthe CGI in either of those films, it's not even going to be very impressive. I know Green Lantern's kinda predicated on computer generated animation, and to be fair I'd say some of what I saw in this film was pretty neat-lookin', but banking on people being too distracted by shiny rings and race cars to notice all the other crap I'm about to rail on that made this film awful - that's just bad business.

There was a good actor in this movie. Mark Strong did Sinestro aboutwellI'd imagine anyone can (we're not talking Shakespeare here, right?). Everyone else blew chunks. Actually that's not true; there were a few seconds of the film where I liked Tomar-Re (the fish lookin' lantern); whoever did his voice in the sound studio gets a gold star. Ryan ReynoldsHal Jordan? I doubt it. He's dead-onDeadpool - you know, for the minute of dialogue they squeezed in for him in Wolverine - but he's not really DC icon material. The DC superhero universe only even plausibly stands up to its Marvel counterparts because its nucleic pantheon of 6-10 heavy-hitting, iconic characters (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, GL, Flash…) are officially MORE super than almost any Marvel character comparable to them (Superman's more iconic than Cap. America; Batman's more iconic than Wolverine, etc.). When you make a Green Lantern movie, you have to put a guy in that suit that commands respect, not the dude who played Van Wilder in Van Wilder.

There were a few points in the film where the people around me cracked up, presumably when they weren't supposed to, like when Hector Hammond screams like a girl, or when Reynolds tried to do the Bale Batman thing and talk in a deep voice to his throwaway female lead in that throwaway identity reveal scene in the middle of the movie. Note to the creative team: Try screening your movie before you put it outit is; you might learn how terrible it is before word gets out and a humiliating screen writing credit follows you around for the rest of your career. This one will.

They put a bunch of easter-egg cameos of other DC comic book characters in here, some of them not directly related to the Green Lantern story. God I hope that doesn't mean they're trying to seed thisthe first in a line of badly-written, awkwardly paced bastardizations of what could have otherwise been good superhero films that eventually lead up to a monumentally bastardized Justice League movie - like what Marvel's doing with the Avengers- but where Batman wears gray tights, Jason Biggs plays the Flash and Aquaman rides a big sea horse. Somehow I imagine that was the intent though; don't say I didn't warn you.

So in short: your 6 to 10-year old might like it, but if you do, you have the good taste of a 6 to 10-year old.

Enjoy!
The movie starts with a CG background science fiction origins of Green Lantern. The power of the Green Lantern is given to those who do not know fear. Parallax is introducedthe evil force which is "fear." As a Green Lantern lays crashed he releases his Green Lantern ring (force) to someone who doesn't know the meaning of the word "fear." Clearly that is Hal Jordon (Ryan Reynolds) who thinks he is Tom Cruise in "Top Gun"he defeats 2 High tech pilot-less air craft by using a maneuver from Ironman.

The movie spends a lot of time building background and lays the foundation for a multiple sequels. This is mostly an introduction of the character.

While the Green Lantern is flying around impressing his former gf, mad scientist and son of a senator, Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard) has been experimenting by injecting himself with microbes, which happen to be alien, creating the super villain for our super hero. They spent a ton of money on special effects. The ring may never make a mistake, but the casting director did. They should have gone the extra expense to get some real box office stars. Ryan Reynolds didn't hack it.

No sex, no nudity, and no F-bombs. Good for kids.
Martin Campbell, though a capable director of action (Hal's training session with the Michael Clarke Duncan-voiced Kilowog is proof of that), doesn't have a poet's instincts.
The film is based on the comic book character, Green Lantern, published by DC Comics. The story is based on Green Lantern: Secret Orign. The film follows the same basic story and most of the events of Secret Origin though it features Parallax instead of Atrocitus. To date, there have been seven human Green Lanterns in the comics. The first Green Lantern is the Golden Age superhero Alan Scott. Scott was an engineer who found a magic green lantern made from a meteor. He made a ring that allowed him to tap the powers of the "Starheart". He originally had no connection to the Green Lantern Corps, but it was later stated his lantern is from the Corps' early days and is an honorary member. His weakness is wood. The second Lantern is the Silver Age Hal Jordan. This was the first human Lantern in the Corps, the intergalactic police force seen in the film. All members of the Corps are vulnerable to the yellow impurity (derived from Parallax being imprisoned in the Central Battery on Oa) though they can overcome it with enough experience and courage. The third is the Bronze Age Guy Gardner. He was Abin Sur's ring's second choice but farther away than Jordan, and later became Jordan's backup. He was removed from the Corps but later readmittedan Honor Guard training new recruits. The fourth is fellow Bronze Age John Stewart, one of DC's first African-American superheroes. He was an architect and marine who replaced a comatose GardnerJordan's backup. When Jordan resigned from the Corps John was the regular Lantern. He now serves alongside Jordanhis regular duty partner and later with Rayner after the Blackest Night eventan Honor Guard and Gardner following the New 52 reboot. The fifth is Modern Age Kyle Rayner. Rayner was an artist who was chosen by the last Guardian of the Universe after the Parallax-possessed Jordan destroyed most of the Corps. He was possessed by Ion, the green equivalent to Parallax, and later by Parallax. He then was partnered with Gardner and later Stewartan Honor Guard. The sixth Lantern is the Modern Age Jade, the daughter of Alan Scott. She had the same powersher father, though without the need for a ring or lantern. During this time she was also vulnerable to wood. After her resurrection, she joined the Corps and was given a ring. The seventh and final Green Lantern Simon Baz was introduced during the relaunched Green Lantern series after the New 52 reboot. Simon is an Arab-American who has faced persecution because of the Arab peoples connection to 9/11 and was a minor league criminal and suspected terrorist that was falsely accused before the ring that Sinestro had before he and Jordan were apparently murdered by the Guardians had chosen himits next wielder and Baz decided to work on turning over a new leaf after becoming a Green Lantern. As of the "New 52" continuity there are currently five human lanterns Jordan, Gardner, Stewart, Rayner, and Baz, with both Alan Scott and Jade no longer in existence. However, a younger version of Alan Scott is being usedpart of DC's "Earth 2" continuity which is cast in an alternate universe. The movie focuses on the second Lantern introduced, Harold "Hal" Jordan. The producers briefly considered making the movie about Scott. But Jordan is more popular and introduced the greater Green Lantern mythology. Scott was in early versions of the Jordan-centered movie but eventually written out. Gardner was in the scripta small role with potential to be expanded, but not included in the movie. Former marine and current actor/model Nick Jones was rumored to play Stewart in a cameo, but the movie makes no mention of Stewart. Yes, but not at the end of the credits. It occurs after the animated credits are shown and before the scrolling credits. Sinestro puts on a yellow ring, and his green lantern suit turns to yellow. It is not explained in the film but the colour yellow is the Achilles heel of Green Lanterns. In the older versions of the comics the colour yellow is the Green Lantern's weakness. However, this will most likely not be covered. The point of the yellow suit is that Sinestro has succumbed to the power of fear. Will is Green, Fear is Yellow, and Sinestro will most likely be the main antagonist of the next movie if it is made using fearhis weapon rather than Will. In the comics, Sinestro takes the yellow ring and creates a "Sinestro Corps", because he thinks the power of fear is stronger. He also feels betrayed and missunderstood by the guardians. No, Green Lantern is a monocular-to-binocular conversion. It was originally filmed in regular/2D, but during post-production, the decision was made for the film to be post converted into Digital 3D. The additional budget for the film during post-production included 3D effects added to the film at the last minute. Before this movie was released, it was stated that a sequel was being developed by writer Michael Goldenberg. On June 26th, 2011, a top studio source told The Hollywood Reporter (THR) that Warner Brothers had given the green light to a sequel despite being "somewhat disappointed" by the first movie's results. The next day, a studio spokesman told THR that no decision had been made. In the ensuing years, there had not been any further developments. The reference made to a green-colored superhero in Deadpool (2016) starring Green Lantern star Ryan Reynolds left the impression that he wouldn't be interested in returning to the role of Hal Jordan (though it might be more of a matter of whether a real costume were made and worn instead of the widely-criticized, post-production digital effects approach being taken). When it was announced in August that a fourteen minutes longer extended cut was to be released fans hoped that it could improve the movie. Unfortunately, the result is rather disappointing. A comparison showed that the difference is only 9 minutes and 33 seconds (excluding credits). The additional scenes are also only plot scenes that do not improve the movie, its story or main characters. There is no more action, relevant new story elements or a deeper insight in Hal Jordan and his problems. Nonetheless one can find a very detailed comparison between both versions with pictures here.
